Born Leon Davidovich Trotsky born Lev Davidovich Bronstein, was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Marxist theorist. He was an influential politician in the early days of the Soviet Union, first as People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army and People’s Commissar of War. He was also a founding member of the Politburo.
Following a power struggle with Joseph Stalin in the 1920s, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union. He was eventually assassinated in Mexico by Ramón Mercader, a Soviet agent, with an ice axe.[1] Trotsky’s ideas form the basis of Trotskyism, his variation of Communist theory, and Trotskyism remains a major school of Marxist thought that is opposed to the theories of Stalinism and Maoism.
How supremely interesting that we would find this book in the Zanzibari, Tanzanian building, the House of Wonders. The House of Wonders is a very large square-shaped building, with several stories, surrounded by tiers of pillars and balconies, and topped by a large clock tower. It was built in 1883 as a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash and was the first in Zanzibar to have electric light and an electric lift. Not surprisingly, when it was built, the local people called it Beit el Ajaib, meaning the House of Wonders.
Today, it is still one of the largest buildings in Zanzibar, and there are plans to open it as the National Museum.Very odd to findTrotsky’s book, Permanent Revolution, hidden away amongst others of its kind in this building… in this country of Moslem fundamentalists. For my brethren who take freedom of speech for granted, this buds for you! This is a portrait of Salim Juma, the first rasta Moslem I had ever met. But as luck would have it, he would not be the last. I was able to tag along with his gang of ruffians for a couple days and take some cool shots of the group members.
And no we didnt break in there!!! We just gave it a D.C. push.
