Beautiful Refuse: A Conversation with Larry Ossei-Mensah and Hugo McCloud
Thursday, June 28th 2012
6:30 to 7:30 PMMeulensteen and Amani Olu are pleased to host a conversation between curator Larry Ossei-Mensah and artist Hugo McCloud on the subject of materiality in McCloud’s large-scale paintings.
Larry Ossei-Mensah is a New York-based writer and independent curator. He has written profiles on artists including Yinka Shonibare, Mickalene Thomas, Rashid Johnson and Derrick Adams for publications such as Arise, Uptown, Whitewall Magazine, and his personal blog My Global Hustle. Ossei-Mensah’s curatorial platform, entitled Beautiful Refuse: Materiality, features multi-dimensional artist Hugo McCloud as part of the Young Curators, New Ideas IV exhibition at Meulensteen.
Hugo McCloud is a multi-dimensional artist who uses an alchemical process in creating painterly compositions from discarded industrial materials. McCloud incorporates a chemical oxidation process that corrodes, contaminates and transforms materials in a universal solvent, resulting in a visually arresting oeuvre of two and three-dimensional objects.
The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
