Buying Art!!
It’s time for us to “step up” our art game…… Some people like to look at art and others choose to buy art! Purchasing art has always been considered to be a prime form of investment. Art can be challenging to forecast in terms of future value, but through proppa (like the UK slang) research and due diligence….u too can have a Basquiat hanging on your wall. Here are a few tips to help U select that prized piece of art:
- Get It Signed: Buy signed pieces with a clear provenance. This will ensure that your piece will maintain value if you ever choose to resell.
- “Street Buzz”: Look for up-and-coming artist who have a “street buzz” in the art world.
- Stick with what you know: Stick with subject matter that is simple and easily recognizable for U. No need trying to buy impressionist art and U are not truly “feeling” or understand the movement, medium or style.
- Narrow it down: Narrow down your selections to the style, medium, or movement that entices U the most. This will make your purchase much easier.
- I LUV IT: Buy what U LOVE! The two reasons for this are simple:
1 Art investments are long-term; make sure that U are in it for the long haul
2. If you don’t like it, no one else will either, it also decreases your opportunity for reselling the piece.
- Network: Network with people in the Art World! I have always found that a great way to conduct research is by talking to people who r passionate about the subject. Who better to talk to then people who make it their business to be in the “knowâ€. Moreover, like a stock broker gives tips … art mavens can “hip” you to “insider” info that googling could never do.
Galleries/Shows: Go to art galleries/shows… This provides you opportunity to ask questions of curators and get clarification on subjects that might befuddle u. Believe me it beats paying a consultancy fee….
Read…..read…..read…..: It is important to read the trade magazines and familiarize yourself with certain terms and jargon that are particular to the art world.
Always remember art investments can generate HUGE financial returns if the proppa amount of effort is exhibited. Spend the time and learn as much as you can before you “cut the checkâ€. The last thing u want is to spend $ on a heap of junk.
