My Global Hustle

Black Gold Movie

The documentary “Black Gold” is a truly fascinating and eye opening story. I came across this film while reading the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago. “Black Gold” highlights the struggle btn a Coffee Farmer Co-op in Ethiopia vs. Multinational corporations (i.e. Starbucks). The coffee farmers are represented by Tadess Meskela, who is on a quest for better trade relations and fairer wages for his constituents. “Black Gold” underpins an issue which is a hot topic in the geopolitical world, “fair trade for developing nations.”

The film takes aim at the World Trade Organization, the alleged ring leader and accused catalyst in preventing the world’s poorer countries from developing sustainable export trade, leaving them dependent on emergency relief. Check out the trailer… This is another film to add to your NetFlix list.

Hhmmm, this is very interesting. I shamefully am ignorant of matters of the world, especially things that bother and frustrate me. Even when I was in high school I chose not to take history because I felt at the time that the stories of slavery would make me hate people who had nothing to do with it. I can’t even watch Roots to this day.
But anyway, thanks for the clip, maybe I will check it out.

Will this flick turn me off of starbucks even more?

Do you think that when the price of their coffee went up, the farmers got a raise? Hmmm!
