Pete Wentz: Mogul Under the Radar
I was reading the Weekend NY Times about “Gym Class Heroes“, my ‘new’ favorite Emo/Hip Hop Band, and their meteoric rise up the Billboard charts. I decided conduct some due diligence in order to better understand the variables involved in the group’s success. A common link in this equation was: Pete Wentz.
Many of you know him as the face of Fall out Boy, but this cat is on his GRUSTLE. Pete is not only the founder of Decaydance Records (Panic! at the Disco, Gym Class Heroes, & The Hush Sound) , but this enterprising young man also writes books, models, has an accessories line & is a thespian.
Pete is a rare breed it seems… in an era where everyone wants to be a star, but few are willing to grind for their success. Pete (50 Cent, Bono, Kanye) is the model image of what leveraging your success can result in. Some might feel artist like Pete lead to the commodification of music, but the fact is this is a BUSINESS FIRST. It’s the artist responsibility to have a sound (or attempt 2 be fluent) business acumen in order 2 ultimately succeed.
As an artist if you want true control of your music and craft, you have to be a savvy business person. There are plenty of stories of individuals who got screwed over because they did not READ the fine print. Artists striving for success in the music BUSINESS need to understand the importance of devising a competitively durable strategy in order to ensure their future financial stability and the communication of their musical vision. “What gets measured gets done!”
