First female Speaker of the House : Nancy Pelosi by Guest Blogger – Samantha Harris

This is HUGE .. I want everyone to take the time out to familiarize themselves with whom Nancy Pelosi is. She happens to be the Speaker of the House and the first Democrat to hold this position in 12 years. FYI In order of command .. if you were unaware it goes President, Vice President, then Speaker of the House. (if you don’t know what that means, please go back to school). Since I’m feeling nice and you may feel dumb, I’ll explain;

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is the presiding officer of the lower house of Congress, the House of Representatives.

The office of Speaker was created by the Constitution of the United States. The Speaker is elected by the House of Representatives, and is its highest-ranking officer. Although it is not a Constitutional requirement, as a practical matter the Speakership always belongs to the majority party, and is that party’s leader, outranking the House Majority Leader. Likewise, every Speaker has been an elected member of the House.
The “Speaker of the House,” as the officer is colloquially known, does not normally personally preside over debates, instead delegating the duty to other members of Congress. Aside from duties relating to heading the House and his or her political party, the Speaker also performs administrative and procedural functions, and remains a representative of his or her congressional district.

In the Presidential Line of Succession, he or she is second in the line, after the Vice President of the United States and before the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate.

Back to the topic at hand .. Nancy Pelosi .. This woman is a firecracker, take no prisoners power house. I could not imagine anyone else I rather have this close to the president (considering his cabinet is full of clowns). I had no idea who she was until I caught her on CNN a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love. This is a quote straight from her mouth about President Bush, “He is an incompetent leader. In fact, he is not a leader,” she said of the president in a 2004 interview. “He’s a person who has no judgment, no experience and no knowledge of the subjects that he has to decide on.” In her first 100 days of office she hopes to tackle issues regarding minimum wage legislation, the promotion of stem cell research and a push to enact the recommendations of the September 11 Congressional report.

A lil background on Ms. Pelosi:::
Ms Pelosi has arrived at the position thanks to a combination of traditional Democratic values, astute tactics, an uncommon determination and a lot of money. The 66-year-old mother of five entered politics late in life, serving as representative for California’s 8th district in San Francisco since 1987. She was born into a political family in Baltimore in 1940. Her father was a US Congressman for Maryland and also served as mayor of Baltimore. Ms Pelosi and her six siblings were put into service by their father, stuffing campaign envelopes and maintaining his “favour file”, a catalogue of favours given, and favours owed. The training served Ms Pelosi well. On entering politics, with the backing of her husband’s $15m fortune, Ms Pelosi put her own children to work. She also maintains a modern equivalent of the “favour file”, a database of over 29,000 loyal donors, most of them cultivated personally by the indefatigable Ms Pelosi.

Wait .. why do I work for NIKEiD? My B.S. in Political Science is going to waste. Watch you’ll see me at the U.N. or in politics later in life. I like the way congresswoman sounds, how about Ms. President. I hope I’ll have all your votes! I vow that everyone on Capital Hill will be rocking exclusive kicks that will decipher their party ties and PAC (political action commity) affiliations.

PAC:: A popular term for a political committee organized for the purpose of raising and spending money to elect and defeat candidates. Most PACs represent business, labor or ideological interests. PACs can give $5,000 to a candidate committee per election (primary, general or special). They can also give up to $15,000 annually to any national party committee, and $5,000 annually to any other PAC. PACs may receive up to $5,000 from any one individual, PAC or party committee per calendar year. A PAC must register with the FEC within 10 days of its formation, providing name and address for the PAC, its treasurer and any connected organizations. Affiliated PACs are treated as one donor for the purpose of contribution limits.
