The Rules: How to Play the Art Game without Sacrificing Artist Integrity at SVA

Amani Olu, in conjunction with Larry Ossei-Mensah presents “The Rules: How to Play the Art Game without Sacrificing Artist Integrity” at the School of Visual Arts, taking place on Mondays from October 7 – 28, 2013 from 6:30pm – 9pm.

As curators and writers with many years of marketing experience, Olu and Ossei-Mensah have encountered many artists who have expressed frustration with the challenges of navigating the nuances of the contemporary art world.

For many artists, the concept of “doing business” – or engaging in any form of marketing, branding or networking – is intimidating.

“The Rules…” serves as their offering to equip artist with the proper tools to successfully navigate the rugged terrain called the “art world.” The course helps artists understand the “art game,” how it is played and which mistakes to avoid.

Participants will leave the course knowing how to:

  • Use marketing and social media as an extension of their artistic practice
  • Effectively navigate (and benefit from) the art world’s hierarchal system
  • Develop new art world alliances and support for their work
  • Elevate you profile in New York’s art world
