Chelsea Block Party in Art in America
Joining forces to make a midsummer night a bit livelier than usual, galleries on West 20th Street stayed open late Tuesday. "It was a collaborative effort led by Anton Kern," said Hansel and Gretel Picture Garden's Jason Vartikar. "He wanted to bring the galleries together to do something special. There's not a lot of community among galleries in New York, but West 20th happens to be a particularly avant-garde street and we all share that connection." Other galleries on the block, including Jack Shainman, Bortolami, ZieherSmith, and Elizabeth Dee shared their current shows, while Anton Kern opened a sprawling group exhibition in the main gallery and a collaboration between Lara Schnitger and My Barbarian in the project space. Dawn Kasper, the nomadic artist who gained notoriety for making work in the Whitney during the 2012 Biennial, crashed the party by opening up David Zwirner's West 20th Street storage space, where she's curated a group show of art by her friends.—PAUL LASTER
