The Importance of Follow Up
People seeking to take their grind to the next level are searching for ways to get a leg up on their competition. We live in a sink or swim society & the only way to stay afloat ( & relevant) is to have a solid network. One of the keys to building an incredible network is mastering the art of following up.
All too often when people make new contacts… they drop the ball in the follow up department. Follow up is one of the key components to relationship building. If you are not top of mind, you will definitely be out of sight (& out of the mix). What is the point of networking if you don’t work to establish a genuine rapport with the people that you meet. Believe me it works & will help you stand out in the crowd. -!YG
Here are a few tips that my OG Keith Ferrazzi has come up with for the perfect follow up:
- Put the name and e-mail address of a new acquaintance in your database and program your calendar to remind you in a month’s time to drop the person another e-mail, just to keep in touch.
- Remember—and this is critical—your follow up shouldn’t remind them of what they can do for you. It’s about what you might be able to do for them. It’s about giving them a reason to want to follow up.
- Always express your gratitude.
- Be sure to include an item of interest from your meeting or conversation—a joke or a shared moment of humor.
- Reaffirm whatever commitments you both made—going both ways.
