Armed + Dangerous = NYPD?

Shocked…? Sad….? I really don’t know what to think. I’m still swallowing a very bitter pill that the halls of justice has dished out today. This morning the verdict came down in the Sean Bell case & the result was an acquittal for detectives Michael Oliver, Gescard Isnora and Marc Cooper on all charges. The judge said “The people have not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that each defendant was not justified”.

Maybe I’m from another planet, but 50 shots in the direction of unarmed suspects. I don’t see where the doubt has occurred in the mind of the judge. Yet again another shining example of our benevolent US justice system at work. As a African-American who was born & raised in NYC, this is not the first time we have seen the NYPD attempt to act above the law. Amadou Diallo, Abner Louima, Anthony Baez, Timothy Stansbury, and the list goes on.

What boggles my mind is that the justice system is supposed 2 work on the behalf of the people. It seems time and time again this notion has been constantly been debunked. Now this is not just a NY issue, it is a national issue. It seems that cases of police brutality and misconduct have become even more brazen in the post Civil Rights era. So what are we 2 do? Will this case be the catalyst that will mobilize a city… even a nation? Or will we whine & moan, before going back 2 our lives with Vente lattes & living la vida socialista.

More questions will be raised in the coming days & weeks. Who does the police department really serve and protect? What will people do to mobilize in order to voice their displeasure? When will being a black in America cease to be a crime in the eyes of the law? Maybe N.W.A. & Ice-T were right. 🙂

Thoughts?
