The Death of the LP?
It’s ironic this article was just posted. As a matter of fact, I was talking 2 a friend of mine last week, a Music Exec in LA, who mentioned 2 me many of the same points this article articulates. He concluded that Cd’s are nothing but a “loss leader” used by big chains 2 get consumers into the stores.
His statement blew me away, but the slump in album sales is indicative of the reality of the music biz’s current state. Moreover, when u have companies like Target & Walmart as your top forms of distribution (4 physical Cd’s) it’s a clear illustration that the tides r changing.
This is not a new phenomenon & hopefully artists will understand this. History buffs like myself will recall that in the 50’s and 60’s it was single sales that drove the industry. As they say…. “what is old has become new again”… just in a different format. New Media has created an opportunity 4 artists 2 become the true “Master of their own Fate”. I have always said that artists should explore selling Digital EPs and Live Albums 2 stimulate sales. The traditional LP just won’t cut it. Creativity is required in order 2 garner sustainable profitablity.
