My Global Hustle

Dancing w/the Dems. vs Dancing w/the Stars

Now that Election Day is over, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The Dems won control of the House of Reps. and many folks are jumping for joy. Many red states are now shining that bright blue…. I can’t help but reflect on a conversation that I had with a friend in London about American Politricks.

During our conversation via gmail chat, he asked me if I was going to vote….. I replied in true “American” form, “why yes I am going to vote”. As I thought to myself, voting is a special and inalienable right that most Americans take for granted. We proceeded to talk about the damage that our government has done to “make the world a better place” and it really made me wonder about my faith in the whole election process. All we have to do is cite the last 2 presidential elections and you can see y I might be a bit jaded. (Note: Bush stole both elections)

As our discussion progressed, I mentioned to my buddy how I believed that most Americans are uninformed and programmed by the media to think a certain way. Moving on…..the time came to vote and well…..let’s just say I never made it to the polls for a number of reasons (lost my voting card, lazy, or just plain lack of faith in the system).

8PM rolls around and America’s favorite show comes on TV….“Dancing with the Stars“. I could not help but be baffled by the fact that people are entertained by these “Saturday Night Fever” rejects trying to reclaim their 15 mins of fame. As I continued to watch, I too became entranced (like millions of other Americans) by this show… Hot chicks in bronzer beat running to the polls to vote by 9pm anyday. Or does it……?

I came to the conclusion that we all live in a Microwave Society! We are always looking for the next “hot thing” that will take us away from the reality of everyday life. As enlightened as I would like to be, I shamefully include myself in that equation. Maybe they should make voting for politicians as easy as voting for Mario Lopez or Emmitt Smith. Just think…..u could call a 1-800 number and vote for all your favorite candidates. Life in a Microwave Society….oh so convenient….

Lucky for me, all my candidates won. (Clinton, Spitzer, and Cuomo)

Now that is Election Day is over…..what next? How will we hold all of these newly and re-elected candidates accountable? We shall see….

Time to Shake,

~YG
